PAST WORKS

Motion Alpha has been making work for 4 years. The work has primarily been focused towards intergenerational projects working with young males aged from 7 through to 24. Our work has been performed at a variety of venues across Canterbury these include the Boing Festival at The Gulbenkian Theatre, The Marlowe Theatre, The Beany House of Art and Knowledge, The Wise Words Festival and Canterbury Christ Church University, many of these works were commissioned projects with funding provided by Art 31, Wise Words, Kent Dance Network, The Canterbury Festival and Studio Wayne McGregor.

SUMMER SCHOOL 2015

In 2015, we created a small company to launch Motion Alpha Dance Company which was performed outside The Marlowe Theatre Canterbury.

YOUTH SUMMER SCHOOL 2016

This was our first junior summer school. During which we explored superheroes using projection, it was performed to an invited audience of friends and family.

SENIOR SUMMER PROJECT 2016

This project was our first commissioned piece funded by Art31 to create outdoor work to be performed at Boing 2016. The completed work was performed outside the Marlowe Theatre and then at BOing 2016 on The Art 31 stage. This piece explored the journey of three refugees as they traveled from place to place seeking asylum.

THE CUBE 2016

The Cube was an intergenerational project that was commissioned by Kent Dance Network to be performed at The Beany House of Art and Knowledge as part of Kent dance Networks Day of Dance 2016. This work was a project created during our 10 week term, using giant cube frames exploring the concept of the 1980’s Rubix Cube.

ME BECOMES WE 2017

Me Becomes We was a commission by Wise Words Festival 2017 to be performed at the festival. The piece was performed three times throughout the day and explored the idea of connectedness. This piece was performed to a public audience of around 200/300 people.

BUILD AND REBUILD 2017

Build and Rebuild Summer school project that saw the company working with projection mapping artist Josh Garner, this gave the company an opportunity to explore technology and dance using giant Lego bricks. This piece was performed to an invited audience of friends and family.

VELOCITY 2018

Velocity was a curtain-raiser performance at the Gulbenkian Theatre as a pre-performance for Motion House Dance Companies' new work Charge.  The piece explored the themes of energy and speed and was performed to a public audience

VELOCITY (MARLOWE DANCE NETWORK) 2018

Velocity was a curtain-raiser performance at the Gulbenkian Theatre as a pre-performance for Motion House Dance Companies'' new work Charge.  We then adapted the work for it to part of The Marlowe Dance Network’s showcase on the Main Stage. The piece explored the themes of energy and speed and was performed to a public audience

Rain

THE RAIN 2018

The Rain (senior company)was a work created for The Marlowe Dance Network’s showcase on the Main Stage The piece explored the power of steam and speed and was performed to a public audience.

CHALK ATTACK 2018

This project was commissioned piece by Art31 to create outdoor work to be performed at Boing 2018. The creation of the work was completed during our 2018 summer school and performed at BOing 2018 on it was seen by around 700/800 people. This piece explored art through dance looking at Canterbury’s rich art heritage.

CHALK ATTACK CURTAIN RAISER 2018

Chalk attack curtain raiser performance at the Gulbenkian Theatre was an adaptation of our summer school commission as a pre performance for James Wiliton Dance ‘The Storm.  The piece explored art through dance looking at Canterbury’s rich art heritage was performed to a public audience

THE GAME 2018

This project was commissioned piece by The Canterbury Festival to create a work to be performed at Made in Kent 2018. The creation of the work was completed during our 2018 summer school and performed at The Made in Kent evening 2018 . This piece saw the company working again with projection mapping exploring 1980’s level up video arcade games, this work was created differently in that we switched the roles of choreographers from the seniors to the Juniors to give them an opportunity to explore their artistic voices.

SATURN 2018

Saturn was a work created by our artistic director for The Marlowe Dance Network’s showcase on the Main Stage. This saw the boys working as part of a larger ensemble of around 70 dancers from three local schools that our artistic director teaches at. The piece explored the Greek mythology of Kronos and was performed to a public audience

DIGITAL PLAYGROUND 2019

In 2018 our artistic director was part of an international digital project called Quest lab run by Studio Wayne McGregor, at the end of this project he secured funding to create a digital dance project. This funding provided us with the opportunity to work with a digital technologist Josh Garner and in the summer of 2019, we created a digital classroom of the future. The project culminated in a performance to friends and families.  This project will be one that we will continue to explore and develop.
